Protect yourself from scams, fraud and impostors

Don't fall victim to scams or fraud. The first step to protecting yourself is to recognize suspicious activity. This can take many forms, such as:

Someone pretending to be a PSE&G employee on the phone, or at your door, demanding immediate payment via a pre-paid credit card or money transfer service.

A company claiming to be PSE&G, or associated with us, that solicits your account information.

Emails, websites or mobile apps that appear to be from PSE&G and require you to provide personal information.


New and common scams

Phone Scam
Phone scammers posing as PSE&G employees are targeting customers across our service area. The scam is affecting utilities across the nation.

These scammers are using false phone numbers that could appear on a caller ID to be PSE&G, and a recording of our customer service phone message to make them sound legitimate. They then threaten to shut off service unless a payment is made immediately.

Most often scammers demand payment via a pre-paid credit card that can be purchased at a local store. Sometimes they request payment be made through a money transfer service such as Western Union or MoneyGram. These calls are not from PSE&G. While we do accept credit cards, pre-paid credit cards and money transfers to pay bills, PSE&G would never demand a specific type of payment and threaten immediate service termination. 

If a caller directs you to go to a local store to purchase a pre-paid card to pay your bill, it is likely a scam. If you receive a strange call and are in doubt, hang up and call us at the phone number listed on your PSE&G bill.

Email Bill Scam
Scammers are targeting utility customers across the nation with emails that appear to be monthly bills from legitimate utilities. These emails are bogus and may contain malicious spam. Do not open or click them and do not provide any personal information. Authorities have been notified of this scam. If you think you may have been a victim, click the Report Fraud/Scam tab above for further instructions on how to protect yourself. Also, please know that PSE&G will never send emails threatening to close your account if you do not take the immediate action of providing personal information.

  • Non-PSE&G customers: If you are not a PSE&G customer and you receive something that looks like a PSE&G email bill, delete it immediately. It is a scam. Do not open or click the email.
  • PSE&G customers: If you receive an email bill from an utility of which you are not a customer, it’s likely a scam. Do not open or click the email. Delete it immediately. If you receive a PSE&G email bill that looks different from your normal bill or seems suspicious in any way, do not click any links. Look at the account number to verify that it is your actual account number. You can find your account number by looking at an old bill or by logging in to your account on PSE& If the account numbers match, then the email is a legitimate email from PSE&G. If they do not, delete the email immediately.

Mobile Applications
Currently, PSE&G has a mobile-friendly website, but does not have a mobile application for smart phones. Do not download apps claiming to be PSE&G, and do not attempt to access your account through a third-party website or app. Instead, visit to access your online account. Using a third-party application could compromise your account information.


How to protect yourself

PSE&G employees are regularly in neighborhoods reading or working on electric meters, administering home energy-saving programs, and maintaining electric and natural gas lines. We occasionally hear reports of people posing as PSE&G employees. Please remember that all PSE&G employees carry a photo identification badge and our contractors have a contractor badge or can provide a work request number and a PSE&G supervisor name and number. If suspicious ask to see their photo ID badge and call us at the number on your bill or the PSE&G website to verify the identity of our employee.

Ask for identification from anyone who comes to your door looking like a PSE&G employee. If you are not satisfied, don’t let the person into your house. Call 911 if you feel intimidated or threatened.

 Also, it’s important to remember that PSE&G will not:

  • Solicit personal information over the telephone, unless you initiated the contact.
  • Send emails threatening to close your account if you do not take the immediate action of providing personal information.
  • Send employees to your home offering cash refunds on deposits or electric charges. We either credit your account or mail a check to your electric service address.

When you encounter suspicious activity that involves PSE&G's name or likeness:

  • Always contact PSE&G using the phone number listed on your bill or the PSE&G website.
  • Ask to see the photo identification badge from suspicious individuals on your property who claim to be PSE&G employees or PSE&G contractors.
  • Using the phone number listed on your PSE&G bill or the PSE&G website, contact us to verify the identity of PSE&G employees or PSE&G contractors.
  • Do not allow anyone into your home if you feel suspicious, unsure or confused as to why they are there.
  • Protect your account information. Shred bills and/or black-out all personal and account information.
  • Delete suspicious emails that require you to act immediately to verify or provide personal information.
  • Delete any emails from utilities if you are not a customer of that utility.
  • Do not respond to suspicious emails. Responding can result in more spam and scam attempts directed at you.
  • Do not trust contact information provided in suspicious emails. Call the number listed on your bill or the PSE&G website.


Report fraud or scams

If you think you may have been a victim of a scam, file a report with your local police department, and contact us by calling 1-800-436-7734. Also, you can contact the Federal Trade Commission and file a complaint online.
