Q: What is the maximum grant amount?
A: $750 for gas and $750 for electric for a combined total not to exceed $1,500.
Q: Will I receive the maximum benefit amount?
A: The maximum benefit amount will be determined based on a past due balance. If the past due balance is lower than the maximum amount allowed for benefit, the customer will not receive the maximum allowed by the program ($750).
Q: How will I receive the payment?
A: The payment will be applied directly to the customer’s utility account.
Q: Can I receive this once per calendar year?
A: Yes. You can reapply each year. Funding is limited.
Q: If my utility is turned off, do I qualify for TRUE?
A: Yes, if service is disconnected but you otherwise meet the requirements of the TRUE Program, you may still apply.
Q: Do I have to apply for a gas and electric grant at the same time?
A: No, a customer can apply for the utilities one at a time. However, they can only apply once for each utility per year.
Q: Do I have to provide a payment history?
A: Yes, the customer has to provide a payment history to show proof of the 4 payments within the past 6 months.
Q: Will my gas and/or electric account remain active until the TRUE payment is received?
A: Yes, there will be no disconnection of service or collection activity on your account for 30 days once the TRUE program amount is pledged by the Affordable Housing Alliance (AHA).
Q: What money is funding the program?
A. This program is funded from the Societal Benefit Charges through the Board of Public Utilities.
Q: How long is the grant money available for?
A: The TRUE program is scheduled to be a two year program (or until funding is exhausted)
Q: Can I apply to TRUE if I have received a NJ SHARES grant?
A: Yes, customers who have received a NJ SHARES grant can still apply for TRUE and be eligible to receive an award.
Q: Can I apply to TRUE if I have received a USF/HEA benefit?
A: No, customers who have received USF/HEA benefits within the past 12 months of the application date are not eligible to apply to TRUE.
