Greening our fleet Transportation is the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions from human activity in New Jersey, responsible for nearly half of the state’s emissions and one-third of carbon dioxide emitted nationally. With more than 6,000 vehicles and construction equipment that travel more than 45 million miles a year, PSE&G is constantly exploring ways to reduce our fleet emissions.
By switching our fleet of 1,700 diesel-powered vehicles to biodiesel fuel four years ago, we have reduced our carbon emissions by 20 percent. In total, we’ve avoided emitting over 9,300 tons of carbon dioxide since 2003.
PSE&G has begun investing in hybrid vehicles and electric drive aerial lifts, which emit less carbon dioxide by running on a combination of gasoline and electricity. These changes in PSE&G’s fleet should reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 81,000 tons by 2020. Over the next ten years, PSE&G will replace 1,300 passenger vehicles with hybrids, and traditional bucket trucks with a combination of hybrid bucket trucks and diesel bucket trucks equipped with electric drives.

Through the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), PSE&G is helping fund development and testing of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles manufactured by Ford and General Motors. As a principle advisor to EPRI, PSE&G's investigation team will then evaluate using these vehicles to reduce carbon emissions from its fleet.

New PSEG hybrid bucket trucks will help reduce greenhouse gases and improve air quality.

PSEG has reduced the number of miles its employees drive. Under a remote reporting initiative, approximately 600 field employees now proceed directly to their work sites, rather than reporting to the office first. In 2007, the New Jersey Department of Transportation recognized PSEG as a "Best Workplace for Commuters" and a "New Jersey Smart Workplace" for promoting employee commuting alternatives that reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality.
