Distribution Network

Distribution power lines are lower voltage utility wires that range from 4,000 to 69,000 volts. They are usually attached to wooden poles that are typically located alongside roadways or in easements along property lines.

Our distribution system is responsible for distributing power to households, municipalities, businesses, and many other establishments throughout New Jersey.

We must keep trees that are located near distribution power lines pruned on a regular cycle. PSE&G implements a four year maintenance cycle, during which trees are either trimmed or removed in order to maintain an adequate distance from the power lines and also to allow for re-growth until the next cycle.

Distribution Contact Information

The Distribution network is divided into four divisions: Palisades, Metro, Central, and Southern. Each division is headed by a forester who serves as a distribution supervisor to tree trimming and other vegetative maintenance.

By clicking on the division that serves your municipality the contact information of the distribution forester for your area will appear.  Below the map you may find a list of municipalities that each division serves in order to assist you in locating the proper contact person.

All service requests should be directed to the PSE&G Customer Service Center at 1-800-350-PSEG (7734) so that your call can be properly directed.

Pruning Techniques on the Distribution System

Sufficient clearance between vegetation and our power lines must be maintained to give trees adequate room for their natural movement in air currents without contacting the power lines. If the branches of a tree are too close to PSE&G power lines, the tree must be pruned.

In order to prevent future vegetation from growing back into the power lines Contractors employ directional pruning techniques which are utilized to train the branches of a tree to grow away from energized conductors. Directional pruning allows for proper healing of pruning cuts without depleting the tree’s natural nutritional reserves.

After trimming, trees may look similar to the images below. However, this is only a representation of how the majority of trees are trimmed. Final decisions on pruning cuts are made based on the species of the tree, its characteristic shape and growth habit, voltage of the conductors and the type of construction located in the vicinity.

Points to Remember:

  • Never attempt to trim or remove any tree next to a power line.
  • Never build tree houses in trees near power lines.
  • Never climb trees near power lines.
  • State and federal laws prohibit any person from working within 10 feet of any electric power facility without proper training and certification.
