When temperatures drop into the teens and low 20's for extended periods, you may experience colder than normal temperatures inside your home due to insufficient heat. In other words, your furnace is working, but it's having difficulty handling the lower temperatures.
Often, long periods of cold weather push heating systems to the maximum. Even if you have set your thermostat to say, 70 degrees; it may only reach 65. This often happens when a heating system is not designed to handle the load, or if drafty windows and doors are preventing the temperature in the home from reaching the thermostat setting. These factors will influence the temperatures in your house:
- How well the house is insulated
- Whether the house has energy efficient windows
- The size and efficiency of your furnace
You can help stay warm by doing the following:
- Replace the filter in your furnace routinely.
- Verify all your windows are closed tightly and locked.
- Close off rooms that you are not using.
- On sunny days, open drapes on the sunny side of the house to trap solar energy; it can save your heating system extra work.
- Close drapes when the sun goes down to hold in heat.
- Make sure areas around windows and doors are well insulated against drafts.
- Keep the garage door closed if the garage is attached to the house.
