Check Your Furnace
Step 1 - Inspect
  • Steam systems:
    • Check the water in the sight glass.
    • If low, turn on the water supply valve to bring the water level up to the half-way mark.
    • Turn off the valve.
  • Hot-water and warm-air systems:
    • Check/replace filters and make sure the blower operates (doing this also improves energy efficiency).

Step 2 - Start Up

  • The pilot light:  follow the instructions located on the heating unit to relight it.
  • Let the pilot burn a few minutes, or if the pilot is already on, set the thermostat to "heat" and raise the setting to five degrees above room temperature.
  • Your heater should come on within a minute or two.

If these steps fail to start your furnace, call 1-800-350-PSEG (7734).
