Follow these simple steps to check your heating system now to make sure it's working properly. If there's a problem, PSE&G will check it for free through September 9, 2007. Between September 10 and October 31, 2007, there is a $25 turn-on charge. So check your heating system now and save $25!*
First inspect your heating system:
- Make sure no combustible liquids or items like boxes, paper, or clothing are stored on or near the unit. Maintain all clearances recommended by the manufacturer.
- If you have a warm air furnace, inspect the air filter and replace if necessary. Make sure the blower door is securely closed.
- For hot water systems, look for any signs of water leakage, check the pressure gauge to determine if the system is properly filled, and oil the circulator motor.
- For steam systems, it’s a good idea to drain and flush out the system now to clear accumulated rust. Before starting the unit, check the water level in the sight glass. If it is low, turn on the water supply valve to bring the water level up to the half-way mark.
- Is the pilot lit? Verify that all shut off valves and gas controls are in the “on” position. Not all units have a pilot light. If the heater is equipped with a standing pilot, a label with the pilot lighting instructions is attached to the heater. Follow those directions to light the pilot before starting the unit.
- Make sure all electrical switches (usually located on or near the unit or at the head of the basement stairs) are on.
Then start the unit:
- At the thermostat, place the system mode switch in the Heat position and then raise the temperature setting 5 degrees above the room temperature.
- Wait 5 minutes to allow the system to start and begin running.
- Verify the burner has started and that heat is circulating through the system vents or radiation without any unusual noises.
- If the system fails to start, recheck the thermostat settings, electrical switches, and look for any tripped breakers.
- Reset, wait five minutes and try again to start the unit.
- Still won’t start?
- Shut off the unit at the thermostat and call 1-800-350-PSEG (7734) 24-hours a day, seven days a week to arrange for a service call by a skilled appliance service technician.
PSE&G will light the pilot and start your system free of charge through September 9, 2007. Between September 10 and October 31, 2007, PSE&G will charge $25* for this service.
