Opportunity for schools to receive state funding for gas conversions
The state of New Jersey has a $8.6 billion program for the construction and renovation of local school buildings throughout the state. Converting the school heating system from oil to gas may qualify under this program. Any district seeking to undertake a school construction, renovation or repair project using these funds is required to apply to the Commissioner of Education for approval.
Abbott school districts will receive 100% financing for approved projects and are required to use the NJ Economic Development Authority (EDA) for issuing the construction bonds and overseeing project management. The Abbott school districts in PSE&G territory include:
Other school districts (non Abbott districts) are also eligible for state funding, though at a level lower than 100%. School districts that are eligible for less than 59% of capital construction costs have the option to use the NJEDA or to accept the state aid and construct the project locally. These districts also have the option to elect to borrow money for school construction from the authority at 2% interest, in lieu of accepting state aid.
