The Bridgeport Harbor Generating Station is a three unit power plant with a net capacity of 529 MW located on Long Island Sound on the west shore of Bridgeport Harbor, CT. A fourth unit at the site is in deactivated reserve.
The three operating units are: a coal-fired (oil backup capability) unit, the largest in the state and the third largest in the New England Power Pool (NEPOOL); a oil-fired unit; and an oil-fired combustion turbine peaking unit.
The coal-fired unit has consistently been a low-cost producer in NEPOOL since it began commercial operation in 1968. The oil-fired steam plant started operation in 1961, and the combustion turbine peaking unit was installed in 1967. PSEG Power’s purchase of the Bridgeport Harbor plant as well as the nearby New Haven Harbor Generating Station adds a total of 961 MW of primarily coal-and-oil-fired electric generating capacity to PSEG Power’s fleet. The acquisition of the plants was completed in December 2002.
