Current Events Newark Students Participate in Fire Prevention
|

|
Fire Prevention is a vital topic to dedicated firefighters everywhere. And to the Newark Fire Department, it’s so important that they conduct an Annual City-Wide Poster Contest for students in grades K-12. This theme of their most recent contest was “Team Up for Fire Safety” - and using art as a backdrop, students in Newark’s public and parochial schools came up with creative ways to educate other children about the dangers of fire and ways to prevent fire-related tragedies.
More than 200 posters were submitted and judged by a panel of Newark firefighters and other community leaders. On January 27, the awards ceremony was held at PSEG’s headquarters in Newark, as it has been for a number of years. Awards were presented to 16 students, spanning every grade level. This year’s Overall Winner was Eniyyah Green of Chancellor Avenue School. All winning posters are entered in the next level of competition, the Essex County contest.

Volunteer Spotlight Employees Go Above and Beyond “The Call”
| Employees at PSE&G’s Northern Inquiry and Collection Center (NICC) in Cranford are used to serving customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But on Sundays, many of them go above and beyond by donating blood at their work location – for patients in NJ hospitals.
The Blood Drive Committee members of the UWUA/UCA-Local 601 and PSE&G recently received an Award of Excellence from New Jersey Blood Services (NJBS). The organization’s Executive Director, John Giandelone, said, “NJBS conducts over 3,000 blood drives a year. But PSE&G in Cranford is the only location that permits us to run drives on Sunday. They are to be commended for their dedication to our community.”

PSE&G employee and blood drive facilitator Tony Gentile said, “Thanks to our members, these drives are successful. At the location, roughly 80 of our 200 employees attempt to donate at each drive, and the drives are held at least once a month.” NJBS says this 40% response rate is outstanding, since the industry average is 10%. The PSE&G team also participates in a Sunday platelet collection, another critical need of NJBS. Whole blood drives are held four times a year and platelet drives once a month. Blood products donated by PSE&G employees from April 2001 to February 2003 have helped save nearly 1400 lives.
NJBS conducts approximately 250 drives a month and needs about 120,000 units of blood annually in order to serve hospitals and patients in 12 counties throughout NJ. For more information on donating blood or platelets, call NJBS at 1-800-933-BLOOD (2566). In the meantime, customer service isn’t the only thing that PSE&G employees in Cranford will continue to provide on Sundays.

Awards and Announcements PSE&G Receives “Friends of Education” Award
It’s not easy to put a dollar value on partnerships between education and business – but their worth is obvious to the participants.
Bayonne Superintendent of Schools Patricia L. McGeehan, Ed.D. recently announced that PSE&G is the first recipient of the Bayonne Education Foundation’s Friend of Education award. “PSE&G was cited for its outstanding leadership and dedication to creating academic opportunities for students and teachers,” said Foundation President Ned Crew.
 |
The Bayonne Education Foundation was established in 2002 at the direction of Bayonne Mayor Joseph V. Doria and Dr. McGeehan, to enhance the quality of education in Bayonne Schools.
A few examples of PSE&G’s activities in this partnership include:
-
donation of 200 books for the public housing after-school program
-
coloring books for every preschool student
-
career development workshops for students during the summer

In the environmental arena, PSE&G established a partnership with the New Jersey Tree Foundation to install planters on school grounds. It also helped form a partnership between the district and the Hackensack Riverkeeper, Inc., a nonprofit organization that works to protect the quality of life for the people and other creatures that inhabit the Hackensack River watershed.
PSE&G regional public affairs manager Rich Dwyer said, "At PSE&G, we believe and understand that the corporate and nonprofit sector must work together to make investments beyond the bottom line. We must use every resource to prepare our students for economic opportunities.”
