ChildWatch - Frequently Asked Questions
ChildWatch is a child safety program sponsored by PSE&G in cooperation with its unions. It offers the help of PSE&G employees to children who become hurt, lost or feel endangered when parents, police or other official sources of help are not nearby. PSE&G trucks and vans are equipped with two-way radios. PSE&G electric and gas field employees can notify dispatchers who then call emergency help, such as the police or first aid squad.
Chances are, you've already taught your children to look for the police first if they are hurt or in trouble. But what if there are no police around? With PSE&G ChildWatch, your child can also look for any of our 5,300 trucks and van and ask our employees for help. We will notify the police, and we will wait outside our vehicle with your child until the police arrive. We hope your family will never need ChildWatch - but if you do, it's a comfort to know we're here!
Do the police and local officials know about ChildWatch?

Yes. We've discussed ChildWatch with police departments and mayors throughout the communities we serve. They approve of our efforts to help create safer neighborhoods for all our children. ChildWatch has been honored with many awards; in fact, it helped earn PSE&G a Citation for Private Sector Initiatives from the President of the United States in 1989.

How can my child recognize a PSE&G van or truck?

Every PSE&G truck and van carries the PSE&G logo, which includes a large "energy burst." Every PSE&G truck and van also carries a large ChildWatch sticker on both sides, as shown in the picture. Most of our trucks and vans are painted white, with orange and yellow stripes.

Which PSE&G people participate in the ChildWatch program?

Your child is most likely to see our electric and gas field employees, who are responsible for keeping our electric and gas systems working properly. Their vehicles are all equipped with two-way radios so they can immediately call for help. If your child comes into a PSE&G Customer Center seeking help, we will call the police from there and watch your child until the police come.

How can I teach my child about the ChildWatch program?

You can point out PSE&G trucks and vans to your children and tell them that the PSE&G employees who work in those trucks and vans can help them if they are hurt, lost, or in trouble. You might also want to ask your children occasionally if they have noticed any PSE&G trucks or vans in the neighborhood.

Does ChildWatch replace other community safety programs?

Definitely not. ChildWatch is designed to support and supplement your police department and any other safety programs your community may already have - not to replace them.

How did the ChildWatch program get started?

ChildWatch was brought to PSE&G by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). PSE&G's other unions, especially UA Local 855, are ardent supporters of ChildWatch. The idea for ChildWatch came from a similar program IBEW began sponsoring at Commonwealth Edison Company in Chicago in 1986. Now, all the electric and gas utilities in New Jersey have ChildWatch programs - and so do many other utilities throughout the country.
